Last year, I have watched three animes that I particularly liked, so I decided to write about them. I hope you enjoy!
My Neighbor Totoro
My Neighbor Totoro is fantasy anime released in 1988. It was written and produced by Hayao Miyazaki. The film won some awards including Animage Anime Grand Prix prize, Mainichi Film Award, amongst others. Totoro, the main character, became a cultural icon.
Plot:
The film depicts the story of two sisters, Satsuke and Mei, who alongside with their dad, move to another house near the hospital their mum is staying in. As they wait for their mum to recover, they investigate the house and the surroundings. Later, they meet spirits and befriend them, becoming particularly closer to Totoro.
Spirited Away
Released in 2001, the film was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It became one the most successful film in Japanese history. According to New York Times, Spirited Away is the second “Best Film of the 21st Century”. The film is often compared to Alice in Wonderland for its fantasy story. Also, Jiufen, a town in Taiwan, is frequently assumed to be the place of inspiration for the film.
Plot:
The film describes the story of a 10-year-old girl named Chihiro Ogino also known as Sen. When Chihiro and her parents are on their way to their new house, they stumble upon an abandoned theme park. The parents decide to investigate the place and find a restaurant. While the parents eat, Chihiro explores the amusement park a bit more. When she returns, she finds out that her parents turned into pigs. With the help of Haku, Chihiro hopes to leave the theme park which is home for supernatural beings (demons, spirits and evil gods) and go back to their world along with her parents.
Your Name
Released in 2016, Your Name was written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. It’s a romantic drama film that has captured the hearts of many people around the world for its emotional impact. The film became the 4th-highest-grossing film of all time in Japan and the 5th-highest-grossing non-English film worldwide.
Plot:
Mitsuha is a girl who wishes to be a boy and live in Tokyo. One day Mitsuha and Taki, a handsome high-school boy that lives in Tokyo, swapped bodies magically. As this occurrence happened frequently and randomly, they had to adjust to each other’s lives. For that, they would leave notes to each other. Consequently, they become closer and develop feelings for each other. The problem is that every time they’re about to meet, distance keeps separating them. It’s a film about fate and time.

You might probably have watched Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro when you were little but in case you haven't, you should check it out. In general, these three films have interesting stories and characters. The animes are very innocent but it will make you think a lot, especially Your Name.
