Goblin

Goblin was probably one of the most popular k-dramas of this year not only in Korea but also internationally. In fact, it became the second highest rated drama on Korean cable television.

This fantasy romance k-drama aired on the 2nd of December 2016 and ended on 21st January 2017. The main cast is composed of 4 phenomenal actors: Gong Yoo, Kim Go-eun, Lee Dong-wook and Yoo In-na.

Synopsis:
A long time ago, Kim Shin was killed by a king who was jealous of him. However, he survives as a goblin and becomes a protector of souls. Goblin lives 900 years waiting to find a mortal bride that could end his immortality because he sees it as a curse. Ji Eun-tak is a high school student who can see ghosts and also the woman that can put an end to Kim Shin’s immortality. However, when these two characters meet each other, a love relationship is formed.

Grim Reaper is in control of taking deceased souls because of a sin he committed in the past. Sunny is the owner of a chicken wing soup. She lives a monotonous life until she meets Grim Reaper and they fall in love with each other. Little did these four characters knew that they were all connected and that their lives were about to change.

Review:
First, let’s start with the storyline. In my opinion, it was very creative, interesting and well-done. I loved how the past and present lives of the characters were intricately intertwined. The development of the story was consistent and harmonious and there was never a moment where I felt bored in watching the episodes. In fact, this is one of those dramas where you watch one episode and you can’t wait to watch another. In addition, the blend of fantasy, romance and a little bit of humour was very pleasant.

In terms of cinematography, I just have one word: aesthetics. The drama was filmed in Korea and in Canada more precisely in the beautiful province of Quebec. If you are interested to see the filming location for each episode, click here. If you want to see the filming location in Quebec, click here. I must admit that they are both great posts!

As I said before the main cast is composed of four talented actors. They all did an incredible work and they represented their characters very well. Kim Shin is brave, lonely but also funny. Ji Eun-tak is hopeful, cheery and enchanting. Grim Reaper is my favourite character from this drama. He is innocent, genuine and amusing although his past haunts him. Sunny is beautiful, passionate but also sorrowful. In the beginning of the drama, we can see that these four characters lived isolated and dejected. However, this situation changes when they meet each other. This perfect transition brought memorable friendships, two love relationships, and even an epic bromance.

Although there is a twelve year age difference between Gong Yoo and Kim Go-eun. Their love relationship was very natural and adorable. I think this shows how professional they are.

However, my favourite love relationship was between Grim Reaper and Sunny. It started a little bit awkward but don’t get me wrong, it was awkward in a cute way. Poor Grim Reaper, he is not really good when it comes to dating life.

Here’s another actor that it is worth to talk about: Yook Sungjae. He is the baby of the cast but I have to say that he was wonderful in this drama. Sungjae played Yoo Deok Hwa, the heir of a conglomerate and Goblin’s honorary nephew. He is so funny, lively and spoiled. Furthermore, I love when he, the Grim Reaper and Goblin are together. The perfect Squad Goals xD

Moreover, it’s impossible to talk about the drama and not refer the bromance! I looooooved it! It's adorable how in the beginning they “hated” each other but then they got closer.

Also, is it just me who loves this iconic scene? They look cool as hell hahaha

The last episode was emotional: Grim Reaper and Sunny end their relationship and Jin Eun-tak dies. After she goes to Reaper’s tea room and Grim Reaper says his signature line: ”Drink the tea, it will make you lose your memories of this life.”, Kim Shin enters the room and starts sobbing. It made me feel so sad. Thankfully, she still had three lives left.

After 30 years, Goblin continues waiting for her but this time he is completely alone. Grim Reaper died once his punishment was over and Sunny passed away as well. Fortunately, Grim Reaper and Sunny are reincarnated in the same bodies. Although they don’t remember each other, Goblin sees them as the main characters in a movie set. Later, they start to date. Goblin goes back to Quebec and Ji Eun-tak is also there.

I seriously loved the ending. It almost makes you think that this drama will not end in a happy way but it does. On top of that, I liked that the coupes got together after reincarnation. It shows that nothing can stop true love.

If you decide to watch this drama, be prepared to laugh, to cry, to feel melancholic and to fall in love with the characters and their stories. Be also prepared to fall in love with the OSTs. They are all amazing!
