The Greatest Showman

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to quickly announce that we have changed our posting schedule. We now post every Friday at 1pm GMT! Due to university and other life circumstances, we decided it would be better to just post once a week!

A few weeks ago, I re-watched one of my favourite films of 2017 - The Greatest Showman. I remember being so excited for this film to be released because all of my friends had a positive opinion towards the movie.

Directed by Michael Gracey and released in December 2017, The Greatest Showman is an American musical drama film. The cast is made up of some popular faces such as Hugh Jackman, Zendaya, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson and many more.

*Spoilers*
Plot:
The Greatest Showman is inspired in the life of an American Showman, Phineas Taylor Barnum. After losing his job in a trading company due to bankruptcy, Barnum decides to open up a museum of oddities which was a failure because it didn’t attract visitors. Therefore, he changes plans and chooses to open up a circus. In town, he searches for unique individuals to be part of this new adventure. Some of those unique individuals are a bearded woman, a dwarf, an obese man, among others. Even though these individuals are criticised by society for being seen as freaks, Barnum still manages to run the show and eventually becomes popular and wealthy.

However, not everything is a sea of roses for Barnum. Some protesters decided to burn the circus which led to the collapse of the building. After this situation, the trope encourages Barnum to restart the circus and he and Philips, the playwright, agree to become partners.

My opinion:
I loved the story of the film so much. It has a magical vibe as well as an inspiring message. At the beginning of the film, we see Barnum as a poor little kid being belittled by others. At that time, he falls in love with Charity. However, her parents never really approved their relationship due to their social status differences. Nonetheless, Barnum never gave up and got to marry the woman of his dreams and create a lovely family composed of two beautiful daughters.

“I wish for happiness like this forever.”
Charity Barnum

I truly liked this quote because as you can see Charity is really grateful for the family she has. This proves that you can find happiness in anything, even the little things in life. As for me, I do share the same opinion as her. As long as I have my family and my best friends by my side and we are all healthy, there is nothing else I can ask for.

The unique individuals that were chosen to be part of the circus are, in my opinion, the stars of the show. It’s wonderful how the movie portrays the message that being physically different from others is not something to be ashamed of. As we can see in the film, those differences are what made them unique and attractive at the same time.

“No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else.”
P.T. Barnum

How boring would it be if we all looked the same, had the same likes and dislikes, had the same opinions and values? The thrilling aspect of humankind is the diversity of races, languages, cultures, nationalities and ethnicities. We should be proud of who we are and celebrate the difference/diversity.

Even though Barnum was responsible for uniting these beautiful unique individuals, he was the character of the film that disappointed me the most. He got to a point in where he became so obsessed with fame and money, that he even distanced himself from his family and trope to go on tour with the opera singer Jenny Lind.

I also hated that scene at the party in which he did not let his trope join him. That was a really disrespectful and unpleasant scene to watch. My heart ached for the trope. They just wanted to bond with people like everybody else and it was a shame that the person they trusted the most, turned his back on them.

"When you're careless with other people, you bring ruin upon yourself."
Jenny Lind

Fortunately, he learned his lesson in a not-so-beautiful way. Not only he was about to ruin his marriage but also lost the building that made his dream come true. Some people just learn their lessons when it is already too late. Luckily for Barnum, his amazing trope and family gave him another chance and remembered him that although he had made mistakes, he also did great things such as accepting the trope for who they are and giving them a family and a place to call home. I’m glad that in end he realises that he already has everything he needs by his side.

Before I talk about the soundtrack, I have to make a reference to the relationship between Philips and Anne. I have to praise their chemistry because it seemed so real. Their love story proved once again that nothing can stop real love from happening.

As for the soundtrack of this film, the songs are incredible! I loved every single song. It’s impossible to hear them and not get them stuck in your head. Plus, all the lyrics are meaningful and I truly enjoy songs with a deep meaning. After I finished watching the film for the first time, the first thing I did was listen to the whole soundtrack again.  It’s really A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

In conclusion, I highly recommend you watch this film if you haven’t had the chance to do it so (which tbh I think almost everyone has seen it by now). The Greatest Showman aroused a whirlwind of emotions in myself. I felt sad, outraged, happy and cheerful. Above all, the movie teaches important lessons and it’s full of encouraging quotes. It’s inspiring, magical and hopeful.

“The noblest art is that of making others happy.”
P.T. Barnum

I hope you have a lovely day!
